The School "Around Vortices" will be held at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from March 12 to March 21, 2014. It school is the opening event of a Thematic Program on Incompressible Fluid Dynamics at IMPA from March through June 2014. The main topic is vortices in fluids, from classical Newtonian fluids, to complex fluids, to superfluids, and in superconductors. The purpose of the school is to introduce young researchers and researchers in other areas to the different aspects of vortex dynamics in fluids and superfluids and superconductors, by bringing together experts in the various fields of continuum and quantum mechanics. School Topics: Vortex dynamics in 2D and 3D incompressible fluid flows: point vortices, vortex blob approximation, vortex sheets and vortex rings, vortex tubes and reconnections, long-time vortex evolutions, blow-up for solutions of the Euler equations. Complex fluids: vortices and elastic stretching, elastic turbulence, applications to biology. Ginzburg-Landau theory of superfluidity and superconductivity: Ginzurg-Landau energy functionals, minimizers, degree boundary conditions, vortex pinning.
